Major Improvements

Upon membership approval, these specifications will constitute FDI 1.4.1. The proposed specifications consists of the following major improvements:

  • New Specifications for Nested Communications were added.
  • The FDI Technology Version variable (FDI_TECHNOLOGY_VERSION) is incremented when a new technology or a change in existing behavior that conflicts with existing behavior is introduced. This variable was added for FDI 1.4.0. FDI Technology version in FDI Specification was inadvertently set to 4 bytes in version 1.4, this is corrected to 2 bytes in version 1.4.1. This is now consistent with the EDDL specification.
  • EDDL predefined variable FDI_TECHNOLOGY_VERSION remains at 0x0104 for this version of the specification.
  • Updates including bug fixes and extended sequence diagram for blob storage.

New Feature: Nested Communication

Nested Communication and supporting features added to enable data exchange between the physical device and the device representation managed by the FDI Server. FDI network infrastructure is supported by switches, remote IO, and other infrastructure devices. The architecture supports device variants, Remote I/O, and Gateways. All configurable modules use the same vendor-specific bus protocol on the client side, while the head station supports the protocol on the server side.

Communication Gateway Plug-In and FDI Package types were added to enable nested communications. The Communication Gateway Plug-in is a component within an FDI Package that is executed by an FDI Server to enable nested communication functionalities.

Updated architecture diagrams now include the Communication Gateway Plug-in.

FCG_TS62769-4 - FDI Packages (Version 1.4.1) was updated to support Nested Communications. Updates include a new appendix describing modular device packages. Each module within a modular device must be documented in a separate FDI Package. The head station of a modular device should be represented as an FDI Gateway Package, while individual modules are represented as FDI Device Packages, except for those modules providing communication functionalities, which should be represented as FDI Gateway Packages.

Two additional specifications have been introduced in this release:

FCG_TS62769-6-300 — FDI Technology Mapping for Gateway Plugins

FCG_TS62769-9 — FDI Gateway Devices
