To Sign or Not Sign … Is Not Even the Question

Digital signatures are required for all registered FDI Device Packages. If you've never dealt with digital signatures before, it may feel overwhelming at first. But the good news is that processes and tools have improved, making it much easier today. Your company will receive digital signatures from Certificate Authorities to use. It's important to start the process early so that you can be ready to sign when product testing is finished.

Fundamentally, there are 3 easy steps to signing a digital package:

1. To sign an FDI Package, you need a valid code signing certificate from a Certification Authority. We've listed several authorities here.  Go to their website to learn more.  Certificates are issued and stored securely on USB tokens, which look like memory sticks but actually have an embedded application to prevent the certificate's secret part from being leaked. The USB token will have a PIN, so make sure to have it ready for signing.

2. Once device package testing is complete, FieldComm Group will add a Registration signature to your package and send it back to you. You must apply your signature to this returned FDI Package.

3. To apply the signature, insert the USB Token into the computer that will be used to sign the FDI Package. With the FDI Package Signing Tool, select the FDI Package and the certificate you want to use. Don't forget to add the trusted timestamp server that extends the validity of the signature on your FDI Package. Then, send the signed package back to FieldComm Group to be added to the FDIsync Library and the Product Registry.
